 Sigma Chi Derby Days at UA Raise Funds to Help Others 

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Members of Sigma Chi fraternity, in conjunction with University of Alabama sororities, raised $25,000 to donate to Children’s Hospital of Alabama.

The UA students generated the proceeds through Derby Days, a week long series of events and competitions and through contributions by local businesses. Community Sponsors included: Chuck’s Fish, Smoke It Up Tobacco, The Balcony, The Lofts, Rounders, JNJ Apparel, Pyro’s Pizza, Crimson Smokers LLC, Renasant Bank, Nationwide Insurance, East Edge, Cahaba Veneer, Inc, Investar Real Estate Services, Inc., Secoa Technology, Welsh Wear, High Tide Bar, Hodges & Ford, Marsh, Rickard, & Bryan, P.C., Habenero’s Trussville, LLC, Tuscaloosa I, LLC, Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP, Capstone Hotel and Omega Financial, Inc.

According to Sigma Chi President, Hunter Ross, “The fraternity works months in advance to encourage participation and involvement to raise funds that will enable Children’s Hospital of Alabama to continue their mission of providing specialized medical care for ill and injured children.”   

Shane Autrey, Community Development Coordinator, expressed, “We are so grateful for this donation to Children’s of Alabama. It is amazing to see these young gentlemen have a successful event and meet their ambitious fundraising goals to help the children. Thank you to Sigma Chi, the sororities, The University of Alabama, and all the donors who helped contribute to Derby Days 2016.”


Sigma Chi has always donated to Children’s Hospital of Alabama, but this year the fraternity decided to make a second donation in the amount of $3,000 to the Pi Beta Phi Foundation, the philanthropy of the Derby Days sorority champion.

Derby Days Chairman, Johnny Kelley, said “We hope the contributions can go far, whether they are utilized to provide the best medical care in the country to the children of our state or aid Pi Beta Phi Foundation, in its mission to promote literacy.”
